So this year was my first year at the gotoAndSki(‘Switzerland’) conference and I didn’t quite know what to expect. Well, besides being part of an awesome speaker list that is…

First thing I couldn’t help but notice is the beautiful location, in the middle of the mountains covered with snow. This alone makes the trip worthwhile. It must be one of the most unique locations for a conference.

Then there’s the format of this conference, which is skiing and other activities during the day and sessions at night. And yes, I do mean AT NIGHT, because sessions didn’t stop before 1 AM at least. I still find it amazing to have so many people staying for the last sessions after a full day of intensive skiing.

Unfortunately, due to the fact that I haven’t been skiing for over 12 years, I didn’t want to risk breaking and arm or leg, but that didn’t stop me from having some fun in the snow. But you know, this isn’t a vacation, it’s a conference. Well, at least, that’s what I told my boss .

About that conference, it has a great atmosphere. With a limited amount of participants the stress lies on networking. It is nice to be able to talk with so many geeks. I must say, I’ve had some inspiring conversations and got to know a couple of designing and coding nut cases.

As for my session, that was about using ORM in AIR (mobile) applications. At first I thought it would be way to much code oriented for this conference. Especially when I looked at the other session descriptions. But when I saw those sessions, I began to wonder whether it would be complex enough for this conference . I knew some of the speakers already and from them I knew what to expect. But I was pleasantly surprised by the speakers I didn’t know. There was some really great talent there and I certainly got inspired by some of the sessions.

I want to express my thanks to Fernando Colaço for organizing this awesome event and for letting me be part of it. I’ve had a wonderful time, met wonderful people, got inspired and I hope to be part of it again next year. I’ll have to make sure I’ll take some skiing lessons before that though… .

Tonight I got one of the “coolest” emails you can get: I’ve been invited to give a session at gotoAndSki(); Switzerland on January 26th, 27th and 28th, 2012, which is really awesome. Unfortunately I haven’t been to this conference before, but I’ve heard very nice things about it and let’s face it, skiing during the day and conferences with diner at night is not your typical conference setup. So I’m really looking forward to it.

Now, about my session, it’s going to be titled “Database Driven Mobile Applications: the power of ORM”. Now, some of you may think “what the hell is ORM?”. Well let me reassure you that it is not magic, but it does some really magical stuff.

ORM allows you to create database driven applications by writing virtually no SQL statements.Normally, this type of feature is restricted to the server side of your application, but now you can use this server-side feature on the client-side in an AIR application.

This session will talk you through the basics of using ORM in AIR and how to “automagically” synchronise your local data with a remote server. Whether that’s a PHP, Java or ColdFusion, it doesn’t matter. That’s not all: we’ll go one step further and take that ability to create database driven applications onto the mobile platform as well. Just like that!

If you are digging this and the other topics presented at gotoAndSki(); make sure you get your tickets in time to enjoy the conference and the gorgeous surroundings of the Swiss Alps. I hope to see you there: switzerland.gotoandski.com

As a longtime Flex developer I’ve always been used to having binding expressions to do one or more of the following things:

Bind the value of one input field to a data model

Bind the value from a data model to an input field or label

Bind the value of one input field to a label or another input field

Now, this binding mechanism always worked by mean of events that triggered an update of the bound field. Usually this is the change event, but you can define your own events that will trigger an update of the binding expression. I’m sure most of you already know this. But did you also know hat you can use a similar binding mechanism in ColdFusion 9?

The binding expressions in ColdFusion enable you to create dependencies between form elements, client-side recordsets, ColdFusion AJAX container elements and information fetched from background data requests. You can use binding with all AJAX-aware tags, but the exact syntax varies a little bit for every tag and for every different source of the data. Let me give you a couple of examples to clarify this.

Using a CFC

When you want to bind data to a public property of a ColdFusion Component (CFC) or to the result of a function within that CFC, the syntax will have to indicate that it needs to work with such a component. Assume you have a CFC named Test. Within that CFC you have a public function called multiply that takes 2 parameters and outputs the result of the calculation. The code could look something like this then.

<cfset test = new Test()/>
<cfdiv bind="cfc:test.multiply(3, 4)"/>

Creating field concatenations

Sometimes you want a certain input field to get a default value based on other input fields. This way you can aid the user in suggesting a certain value based on what he has already filled out. One such example could be the automatic generation of an email address. Suppose you have a form which requests the user’s first and last name and you’ll probably want the email address to be firstname.lastname@company.com (unless this would create a duplicate email address or illegal characters in some cases). So why should you be bothered to fill out the email address in 99% of the times you fill out this form?

You could make use of field binding in ColdFusion and concatinate the first and last name with a fixed string for the last part of the email address. To get the binding working you will have to define when the email address is updated. In this particular case I’m just going to update it on every keystroke in either the first name or last name field. The code then looks like this.

<cfform>
    First Name:<br />
    <cfinput type="text" name="firstname"><br />
    Last Name:<br>
    <cfinput type="text" name="lastname"><br />
    E-Mail:<br />
    <cfinput type="text" name="email"
             bind="{firstname@keyup}.{lastname@keyup}@company.com">
    <br />
    <cfinput name="btnSubmit" type="submit">
</cfform>

Using a JavaScript Function

Sometimes it’s not that simple to concatenate values and perhaps some additional checks have to be performed before you can output the value to another field. Or maybe you just want the first letter of the first name instead of the full first name in the email address. These would be a perfect situations where you would want to use a JavaScript function. So you define a function that does the concatenation for you and simply display the result of the function.

This is quite similar to using a CFC, so the syntax is quite similar as well. Just check the code below to see what I mean.

<html>
<head>
    <script language="javascript">
        emailAddress = function(firstname,lastname) {
            return (firstname.substring(0,1) + lastname + '@company.com');
        }
    </script>
</head>
<body>
    <cfform>
        First Name:<br />
        <cfinput type="text" name="firstname"><br />
        Last Name:<br />
        <cfinput type="text" name="lastname"><br />
        E-Mail:<br />
        <cfinput type="text" name="email"
                 bind="javascript:emailAddress({firstname@keyup},{lastname@keyup})">
        <br/>
        <cfinput name="btnSubmit" type="submit">
    </cfform>
</body>
</html>

These are a few examples and situations where you could make use of the binding expressions. Of course there are still other ways of using them, such as binding the result of an AJAX call to a <cfselect> tag. Or you could use binding with a <cfajaxproxy> tag as well as a few others. But this blog post acts as a teaser, so hopefully you’re curious now and start working with binding expressions in ColdFusion 9, because this is some good stuff…

For the server, we have coldFusion, and we know how easy and yet fast and powerful CF is. For the client, we have jQuery: the “write less do more” Javascript library. “Write less do more” is jQueryʼs slogan, but it could as well be ColdFusionʼs. ColdFusion, jQuery and probably a spice of HTML 5, those are the ingredients of some amazingly powerful, and yet simple to develop, applications.

In a second part join Tridib Roy Chowdhury, Senior Director of Products, and Priyank Shrivastava, Senior Product Marketing Manager, for an exceptional meet the team session where you will get the highlights of ColdFusion and ColdFusion Builder roadmap. This is also your best chance to come and raise your hand for questions and/or recommendations you have about ColdFusion.

The next ColdFusion user Group meeting in Belgium wil take place on June 29th, 2010. The location is the Adobe Offices, Culliganlaan 2F, Diegem. The meeting will start at 19h00 and you’ll have the opportunity to get some free drinks and do some networking with fellow developers. You are not required to know much about ColdFusion for this particular event, so that’s no excuse not to join us.

Now, the ColdFusion User Group has always been meant to be community driven. However, it seems a bit hard to convince you guys to step up and talk about the things you do with ColdFusion. So, for this meeting we thought we’d set an example and do some sessions ourselves:

Waldorf (aka Steven Peeters) is going to take it from there and digg a litle deeper into the realm of using AIR with ColdFusion by walking you through an application that uses the ColdFusion ORM feature on the client side with an SQLite database to have automatic online/offline synchronisation.

On May 26th we held our second ColdFusion User Group event in Belgium. This time we had the nice apportunity to have some international speakers come over, because they were in the area after all after being at SOTR2010.

We started off with Ben Nadel who talked about session management and component lifecycles in ColdFusion. I learned tons of new stuff that I (as a beginning ColdFusion developer) wasn’t even aware of. Stuff like how ColdFusion pages are constructed and when the session scope becomes available. This can be very useful to implements some extra security checks and such. Thanks Ben!

Then we let Ray Camden take the stage. (Well, it wasn’t really a stage, but you know what I mean, right?.) He had some interesting stuff to talk about as well. He showed us some really cool stuff you could do with the snippets panel. But then I was wondering how the hell you start writing your own snippets. And just as I was thinking that, Ray actually explained how it works. So now I’m definitely going to be digging into that as well (assuming I can find the extra time of course).

After a well-deserved short break Terry Ryan talked and demoed a bit more about Flash Catalyst. This was probably quite interesting for most people in the room, but I had seen this a thousand times before, so for me that was not really the highlight of the evening, unfortunately. Sorry about that, Terry.

Since we were running a bit late by then, he had to hurry up and gain some time, because as a last treat we had our “meet the team” session with Claude Englebert, Terry Ryan and Alison Huselid. As usual here in Belgium, there were some difficulties getting the conversation started. We’re all quiet and shy here in Belgium, you know… But after a few hesitations we got something going on, with most of the questions regarding pricing (which I had anticipated).

Although it was a great event, I was a bit disappointed by the number of attendees. Lots of people registered, but too few actually showed up. All of you who didn’t show up, you deserve a spanking! You’d better be there next time. Yes, that’s right. We are already working on our next event, so keep an eye out for it and make sure you don’t miss it, ’cause it’s going to be a technical session this time with lots fo jaw-dropping stuff.

OK, so now we’re done with the AIR 2.0 workshop here. Things were really looking good and we had some great questions and responses from the audience. Let me make a small summary of what we covered.

Peter Elst was up first and he talked about the basic stuff in AIR. Since the audience was divided into people already familiar with AIR and people who had no experience at all, this was a realy good start to get everyone up-to-speed. Topics ranged from basic AIR APIs like file access and drag-and-drop functionality to URL monitoring and basic SQLite access.

That’s where I stepped in and turned the volume up just a notch, because my session was entirely about working with the SQLite local database. Starting with the basics on accessing the database synchronously or asynchronously, I moved on to using the ColdFusion 9 ORM capabilities on the client side. That means that you don’t have to write any SQL statements to create or update the database. The cool thing about this specific ORM implementation is the fact that you can use that feature to synchronise your local database with a remote server as well. Unfortunately, during the workshop, the internet connection dropped and I could show it actually working, so you guys have to believe me that this is awesome stuff. You can find my slides from the session below.

Before having everyone falling asleep, I let Lee Brimelow take the stage and he went on about multitouch on devices. He talked about the new possibilities with multitouch and gestures in AIR and how you can test it on devices (laptops) that are not multitouch enabled.

Finally, Weyert De Boer took the stage and he had some great stuff to tell about using AIR’s socket server capabilities to create a custom HTTP server application. This was really impressive stuff.

At the end we had a small Q&A session and that was a wrap for us. So now, I would just like to thank everyone who attended the workshop and hopefully you’ve taken along some great new insights.

Yes! This is the moment we’ve all been waiting for so long. After a long series of beta and prerelease versions, the new Flex 4 SDK has been officially released. And of course, this release is also accompanied with the release of Flash Builder 4. This is the new version of Flex Builder (for those of you who live on another planet and haven’t heard of it yet) and it contains a lot of great new and improved features:

Data/Services panel to allow a very easy connection with different kinds of back end technologies such as ColdFusion, Java, PHP and HTTP services.

Automatic Data Transfer Object (Value Object) creation based on the return types of the services

Drag & drop attachment of data to visual components

Enhanced refactoring support

Code generation of getters and setters

Network traffic monitoring

Enhanced memory profiling support

…

I’ve been working with the prerelease versions for quite some time now and I must say I’m pretty found of the new features they’ve put in there. In short, this is one release you want to upgrade to as soon as possible. So, go ahead and point your browser to http://www.adobe.com/products/flex/ and download the latest version.

As second important release is ColdFusion Builder. In the early days you had ColdFusion Studio, but other than that, there was no real specific ColdFusion IDE available. So developers had to work with Dreamweaver and open source Eclipse plug-ins such as CFEclipse. But now, there is finally another new and improved ColdFusion IDE available and it’s called ColdFusion Builder. It is also based on Eclipse, which means that you can either install it as a stand-alone version or as a plug-in on top of your existing Eclipse installation. That means that you can also write your own extensions for ColdFusion Builder to help you (and other developers) write code a lot easier. You can have extensions for code snippets, templates, query generation etc. You even have an extension to help you write your own extensions!

This is similar to what you can do with Flash Builder as well, so if you’re a Flex developer and you also use ColdFusion as back end technology, you might be better off integrating both development environments into the same IDE. That can save you a lot of time not having to switch tools all the time. Just go ahead and download it at http://www.adobe.com/products/coldfusion/.

The last release of today is the Flash Platform Services for Social Network Integration. Wow, now that’s a term to remember. But what the hell does it mean? Well for starters it means that Adobe is making life simple for people who want to connect their Flash applications to social networks. The Social service has the following benefits:

One API connects your application with multiple social networks

The service adapts to social network changes so you don’t need to recompile your application

Multiple pricing plans      available

The social service consists of three parts:

A simple ActionScript 3 API, which can be implemented in Flash or Flex and aggregates the different social network APIs, including Facebook Connect

Plug-and-play widgets that use the social API for login, share, invite, select friends and other commands

Dashboard analytics for reviewing and optimizing your social performance

Now, what does all that mean? Well, it means that you no longer have to worry about the ever changing Facebook or Twitter APIs, because the Social services will take care of the for you. You just write your code against the Social services API and the changes in the network services such as Facebook or Twitter are being monitored by Adobe and Gigya to make sure your applications don’t break when a new API is released. If you want to know more about this, you can always look at http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flashplatform/services/social/.

So, I must say that today is a very big day in my professional life, since I’m working with both Flex and ColdFusion. From now on, life as a Flex developer is going to be a lot easier…
